What do you want to see on Nerd Fitness?

2.0I spent yesterday writing a blog for today.

I woke up this morning to reread it…and I hated it.  Rather than post something I’m not happy with, I’m going to post something that DOES make me happy: the future of Nerd Fitness. Let me tell you about my vision…

I see a complete website with workout routines, instructions on how to do each exercise properly with correct form, and a place for people who have never worked out before to get the right information before they even get started.  Along with all of this useful information, I’ll still be writing a daily blog about the latest health trends, funny stuff in internet land, and maybe even reviews of games/movies/books.

There will also be a full fledged message board community (closed to the public) where people at various levels of fitness and nerd-ness can come hang out to help each other get in shape.  Instead of this just being a website that teaches you how to get in shape, it will be a website that will allow nerds to help other nerds get in shape.  Reputation points will be given to those posters who provide the most help, and coins will be given out to those deemed the most helpful.  Contests and prizes will reward those with the most rep points and/or coins at the end of each month.

You’re seeing phase 1 of Nerd Fitness right now with this blog.  I’ll be working over the next six months to launch phase 2, Nerd Fitness 2.0.  For those of you who visit this site, thanks for coming back; I think this is the start of something special.  Now, this is where I need your help.  Because I’m the only guy working on this site, and I have another full time job on the side…I need to concentrate my time into delivering what you guys want the most.  You know that episode of Seinfeld where Kramer has the same phone number as Movie Fone?  “….Why don’t you just TELL me what movie you want to see.”

I want you guys to tell me what you want to see out of this site, and I’ll direct my efforts accordingly.  If you’ve been to another fitness site, what did you like and what didn’t you like.  What did you want to see that wasn’t there?  Throw any suggestions or ideas at me you have, no matter how ridiculous.

Level Up Your Life
  • I like where your head's at Evan. I think leveling up would be freaking awesome. I'd probably go with a WoW/D&D; motif, just because that's immediately what I think of when I think leveling up.

Maybe cross the achievements with leveling up and allow you to build a warrior avatar...do 200 total pull ups and your strength goes up +1. Get 10 +1's and your character goes to level 2. If you want to be a body builder, your guy will look like a warrior...a runner and your guy will look like a scout, and if you just want to be in shape you'd look like a ranger. Don't level up your character at all and he'll turn fat. haha

As long as people are honest and don't cheat the system, I think this could be really neat.

Now, this might have to be Nerd Fitness 3.0, because I'd want it to look badass and unfortunately don't have the money to pay a graphic designer to build custom avatars and such...yet. Unless I win the lottery next week.

  • One of the first things I thought of when I came across your site was some sort of attribute system where you could almost literally 'level up' . Define some broad categories of fitness - aerobic, strength, weight/BMI, etc and then define specific criteria within those that define the category - # of pushups/pullups/crunches, time or distance for running, etc. Tie the data into some sort of graphical representation of your current 'character' which you can 'level up' by tracking your real world fitness progress. I haven't really thought it out much beyond that but the idea is basically just to turn fitness into a game...
  • Hahahahaha.

Well, I don't want to put naked ladies on the site, but I do work with plenty of attractive women at my day job. How about a section where you email in questions, and these ladies provide insight into the female mind?

Far more beneficial than pics of naked chicks. That's what the rest of the internet is for!

    Naked ladies, obv...

A social element would be nice. For me, NerdFitness is really about a specific lifestyle and mindset, so anything that allows the user community to re-enforce the personal development (physical, mental, etc) mentally would be great.

Achievements/point system would definitely be fun. A geographic/location element might be nice for those that are in the same state/country to meet up (provided there are enough people interested). NerdFitness meetup and workout session followed by LAN party? Don't mind if I do.
