I just wanted to say thanks for keeping the blog up! I just found it yesterday and it is helping to kickstart me on my way. Hopefully I'll manage to stick with it, I did the Beginner Body Weight Workout this morning--very good, and it definitely gives someone who is out of shape a great workout without being TOO much. I'm planning to post my progress on my blog, hopefully if anyone reads it they'll follow back to here.

HEH. You gave me a good laugh. Love the concept of the motivation monster, but it's downright true. My motivation when I started training was that I had a date set for the first triathlon, and I was going to finish the thing come hell or high water.

This season, it's more of a multiple part motivation for me:

1) You're doing an IronMan, and those are dangerous if you aren't ready for them. 2) You paid $550 just to enter in that IronMan. 3) Your coach will kick your butt clear pass your shoulders if you miss a workout without a good reason. 4) You have to earn that badass tattoo you want. 5) You're paying for a coach at two whole days wages per month. Better show up with bells on!

I think this is what my motivation monster looks like, even though I don't do weight watchers: http://www.foxnews.com/static/managed/img/Enter...

Hey Nick!

Welcome to the club, the water's warm (or something like that). I bet you
scored major brownie points with your wife this weekend - well played sir.
I bet if it was just you at your house, you would do what I normally do in
the snow and just drive back and forth over it until the tire treads wear
away enough of the snow.

Shoveling snow is brutal, but a hell of a lower back, shoulder, and biceps
workout. Glad to hear the beginner body weight workout was challenging for
you. Hopefully you're only kinda dead, and not completely dead. That
wouldn't be good for the readership.

-NF Steve

Nice post...helps put things in perspective. I'm a relatively new reader to Nerd Fitness but stuff like this keeps me coming back for more! I think another good motivator is having someone that relies on you to do something when you don't want to. Like shoveling the driveway out from under 6-8 inches of snow (I live in PA), so you and your wife can go Christmas shopping. By my calculations, I ended up shoveling ~500 cubic feet of snow this Saturday. Not exactly tops on my to-do list, but it needs to be done.

By the way, here's a quick equation for you: 3 hours shoveling snow + 1 NF beginner bodyweight workout + 1 out of shape individual = dead

Hey Steve,

Thanks for the comment man. Dude, shit happens. It's how you deal with it that makes you who you are.

Yeah man, once you're vertical and you've already shut the alarm clock off, crank out 20 jumping jacks, or do some quick pushups, crack your blinds, splash water on your face, whatever.

-NF Steve

I saw your twitter post last night (the Shawshank quote) and had a feeling that it meant this post was coming today...

...and it arrives not a moment too soon, my motivation has been for sh*t this past week, and the new lifestyle I've been striving before has pretty much went headfirst off of a cliff. So thanks.

I also have my alarm clock on the other side of the room (when I lived by myself I had a second one in the dining room too). When it was right next to my bed I would turn it off w/o even realizing it. I still gotta work on actually getting up when it goes off though, instead of resetting it for a later time.
