I'm new to the NerdFitness rebellion, but after seeing this whole class thing actually going on in the forums (I loved the article), I knew I had to join. Anyway, One of the things I really wanted to do again, now that I'm hoping to really make the commitment to fitness, was get back into martial arts. So I figured the Monk class was the way to go. Although it does sound cool to multi-class as a Monk/Assassin. But I'm just gonna take it one step at a time.

I was doing Kung Fu (Northern Shaolin, with a healthy smattering of Yang and Chen style Tai Chi) for about 10 years, and I also love Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (although I tap more than Savion Glover), but what I really want to do is get back into sparring with all the young (fit) punks that make me feel old. The ultimate goal is to do MMA style sparring (see what I did there...ultimate). Don't get me wrong, I DO NOT want to step into the cage for real...I don't have the heart for that. I just want to drag someone down to the ground with me when I get frustrated. :eek-new:

Good morning Rebellion, Finland says hello! My name is Ensi and I'm a 21-year-young woman from the forests of Turku, a town in our southwestern shore. And I'm here to join the Rebellion! :cool-new: My journey doesn't start here, though. It goes years back...

I have always been overweight. I was lonely and depressed through my childhood years and I had an eating disorder of some sort: I could easily eat one chocolate bar a day, if not two (that's half a pound of chocolate per day... every day). So I was the lonely fat kid who couldn't walk through the class room to her seat without bumping her clumsy legs to all the other chairs on the way. But as said, I was that kid.

Two years ago I weighed 204 pounds on my heaviest (I'm about 5'5'', 168 cm tall. In Finland we have the metric system, but I'm going to use pounds and feet for everyone's convenience). At that time I got fed up and changed my habits: I ate less chocolate (couldn't give it up right away, it was way too addictive), ate more right foods and started exercising. I went jogging and did weight training. The weight started to come off quite easily and I ended up losing 28 pounds, now weighing 176. Then I was introduced to a lovely thing called *the stall*. I've been stuck here alone for a whole year or so, and now I'm joining the Rebellion in order to get back on track. And how did I hear about this glorious, ambitious army?

Well... Google told me. I asked Google, "How to become an assassin?" (I'm curious, nothing serious here, I'm just an artist...!) and the fifth path Google showed me led me here: http://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/2011/03/24/assassins-creed/
I read the article and then started to sniff around: what is this Nerd Fitness...? Sounds fun! I've struggled with exercising because it has simply become boring. Running on a steady pace for miles is just boring. Lifting kettlebells in my appartment is boring. Gym is also boring when there's a huge gorilla between me and the dumbbells. But I need the exercise. I have PCOS. That means that losing weight is a constant battle. A battle I'm going to win. Like a *boss*. And NF seems like the fun boost I need!

Today I'm a happy loon who respects herself. My thoughts don't spin around food all the time and I feel like I've woken up after years of depression and thinking about food that I'm not allowed to eat 24/7. Now I just want to see just how far I can get in this Rebellion! I bought the basic Rebel Fitness Guide yesterday and did my first workout (started on level 2, because I do have some years of exercise behind me). The exercise took an hour, and I was able to go through it. I was positively surprised because I was steaming red and tired after the exercise, but I felt very good. I had been afraid that the exercises wouldn't be tough enough. How silly of me! This helped me to set my initial goals.

*Goal #1*:
- Level up to level 3, OUTCAST
- Lose 5 pounds in the process
- Learn to eat dark chocolate in moderation (too much of an addiction at the moment)
- learn a healthy portion size

*Goal #2*:
- Level up to level 3, OUTSIDER
- Lose another 5 pounds in the process
- learn 3 new food recipes

*Goal #3*:
- Level up to level 4, REBEL
- Lose another 5 pounds here as well

*Goal #4*:
- Level up to level 4, RENEGADE
- Lose the final 5 pounds in the process!

I might add something to these goals later on, now I'm concentrating on the first one... I've managed to switch milk chocolate to dark chocolate (at least 70 % cocoa), but I'm eating it too much and too obsessively. Now it's day 4 without any dark chocolate, and I'm feeling good about it. I've had a couple of hard moments at the grocery store, but once I've held that chocolate bar in my hand I've reminded myself of my bigger goals. Also, a friend of mine does exercise and tries to lose some weight, so I thought what she would say if I bought the chocolate. Si, I'm clear for now...! :D

So, Rebellion. I'm a volunteer who loves archery, walking in the woods, arts, movies, literature... And I'm ready to rock.

*LET'S DO THIS, PERRRRKELE.*

Hi there! Forums are something I've never tried before, so I thought - why not? Been a big fan of the site for a while.

I'm 23, female, 5'4", and 155lbs. After graduating from college (and binge drinking all of senior year) I've put a few extra lbs I'd never seen before. Transitioning to 9-5 adulthood hasn't been the best for my health either. I'm tired of sitting around and putting on extra weight

My "normal" weight was 145 for the past 5 years - first clue its time to get back into shape! As for goals, I don't really care about my weight, amount I can lift, etc; I just want to feel better, look better, and move better... (maybe nab me a boyfriend after a new hot bod? :P )

I look forward to the NF community, tips, and support!

Ok, basics. I'm 23 years old, about 5' 10" and just a shade over 200lbs (a month ago I was about 220). I've been eating partially Paleo for about a month now and, in combination with the personal trainer I've been working with for 2 weeks, this has been showing positive improvements (as evidenced by the weight drop). Ideally my weight will be around 180, so I still have a ways to go, but after that first 15 I feel like I got this in the bag.

People who inspire me, not all of whom are strictly 'real', include Ezio (from Assassins Creed 2, Brotherhood, and Revelations), and Neil Strauss (author of The Game, and Emergency: This Book Will Save Your Life) I've always been the kind of guy who would see things in movies or video games and think "Wow, I wish I could do that." Well I'm going to. that's why I will be very busy for the next few years working with my trainer, learning to skydive, becoming competent in parkour and kung fu, competing in crossfit and learning wilderness survival and urban evasion. I also have plans to travel, but I'm focusing on other areas just now. In my mind, the two biggest limiting factors to ALL of my goals are Money and my current level (or lack thereof) of fitness, both of which I am actively pursuing to correct. One of my very favorite books is 'Emergency: This Book Will Save Your Life' and I hope to write something similar within the next decade.

Also, I have been eating as much Paleo as I can while having almost no control over the householf food, unfortunately the kitchen can only handle one cook at a time, and I get veto'd. So I hope to go full Paleo as soon as I get my own place, and as soon as I get the finer points figured out.

I've found the NF articles to be very inspirational and informative, and I look forward to learning how to be part of the internets, and part of this community.

also, is there anywhere I can stop for lunch that doesn't completely suck? I mean, I guess there's always subway...

Bonjour all,

I'm Eddard. I'm 26 and live in New York (Staten Island, ohpleasestoplaughingatme). I've read Nerd Fitness for years, lurked a bit on the boards a while back, then disappeared for a while. In the meantime, I got married and started grad school (studying Urban Planning). After going through one of my weekly existential crises, I decided to try something different and actually act on an impulse.

So here I am.

I'm a fledgling nerd as evidenced by both my username and my bizarre fixation on inconsequential continuity errors.

Oh yea, fitness goals! I'm 5'8, weight about 170. About 2 years ago, I was at 160, finally put on a bit of lean muscle, and dropped a significant amount of body fat. I was running 5ks weekly, and was getting my runs up to almost 10 miles. I do like to run, but more for fun and ritual rather than fitness. I'm very much into short, high intensity body weight workouts, though I've fallen badly off the good food/exercise wagon. Can't afford a gym just yet, and would really enjoy spending most of my workout time outside.

Laziness has transformed by body into a shape resembling a flabby pear. My waist is at about 35 inches. I'd like to get that down significantly. It's almost as if craft brews (which I love oh so much) deposit themselves directly in my gut. The numbers are pretty tangential. I'd really like to increase my strength, speed, and endurance first, and enjoy the physical improvements as a happy afterthought.

Thanks for sitting through the rambling. Looking forward to getting started.

Cheers.

Ghost here,

Now I know that most people set up their own challenges and everything.
But I function better when I have something to prove or compete.
So I was wondering if anyone out there wants to challenge an Assassin to push his limits.

(Some stats in sig.)
What my workout consists of:
My maximum current reps per set.
15x Diamond Pushups
10x Lying Leg raises
20sec Back Bridge hold
5x Pullups
Squats (not sure of my max?)
Sporadic Handstands (can't freestand yet, working to HSPU w/ wall)

Constructive feedback is greatly appreciated. (Wasn't sure if should put this in challenge section, because it isn't really a challenge.)

Donating blood/plasma...weird question

Hi everyone. I looked through all the topics in the forums and have no idea where this would go...it's probably a somewhat strange question, but as I'm new to this, I figured why not ask?

I regularly donate whole blood, and today I will be donating plasma for the first time. After you donate, they make you eat before you leave. Generally the choices are: a pre-packaged muffin, crackers and cheese, chocolate/candy, fruit juices--orange and apple.

My question is this--I know that, for my health, I need to eat after donating. I have been following paleo all week and it hasn't proven to be too much of a challenge. We were headed that way anyway! What would you suggest I have after donating? I was thinking orange juice and cheese and crackers would be the best thing, as we have not completely cut out dairy yet.
