Yes start with your own bodyweight. For push ups, go for wall push up until are strong enough to do knee push ups. If you can do 15 knee push ups, go for dumbbells next. After maybe 3 months of progressive overload with dumbbells, use a machine chest press. And yes, machines are safer. Even nerd fitness knows it!

The big compound lifts develop a lot of strength and muscle especially with free weights. But if you want a lagging muscle to catch up, for example, your hamstrings are weak or not as big as your quads, then do the hamstring curl machine. It could be lying hamcurl machine or seated hamcurl. Use the machine. It’s good for you.

Then you need to work heavy bro. Either that may be machines or free weights. Try it. Go heavy. Go to failure on your last set. If you think you can’t do more one rep, try to squeeze one more. As Arnold says, SHOCK THE MUSCLES!

Haha! Don’t do handstands brother. Not full range of motion. And very advanced! Just go to dumbbells and yes overhead press machines. The only thing that really matters is intensity and progressive overload in that exercise.

Machines are great. Dumbbells are also great! I know you do strength training differently here at Nerd Fitness so I really have nothing bad to say. But I’m gonna say this: body builders use machines. Not just dumbbells and barbells. I’m sure you know who Chris Bumstead is. I’m sure you know what Mr. Olympia is. And I don’t think he has any awkward functional movements because he uses machines. And I say this (and this is my opinion), he is stronger than any of you in nerd fitness because he uses machines and free weights! Get it? You can get the best of both worlds, obviously for Chris Bumstead. So hopefully this comment gets you (and your friends) to change your minds about exercise machines. Use them! They’re there for a reason, you know.
