The 28-Day Challenge: Are You Up For It?

Screen shot 2010-02-28 at 10.59.07 PMWhat’s with the beach?  Keep reading and find out.

While I was out at sea last week, I had an article published over on Art of Manliness: 8 Reasons You Need to Rediscover Your Passion for Exercise.  I feel really honored to be a part of that site, so thanks Brett and Kate! If you’re new to Nerd Fitness, welcome!  Here are the best ways to connect:

Site Update

I realized I did a site update a two weeks back, but it’s time for another quick one:

I now have over 1,000 email and rss subscribers!

If you run your own blog and are currently trying to build a following, I want you to know that it took nine months of writing every single day to get my first 100 subscribers.  It then took three months to get to 500 (after I cut back to two high-quality posts a week and started putting major effort into building relationships with other bloggers and websites), and then a month and a half to go from 500 to 1000 (with a big bump from my guest post on Art of Manliness).

Moral of the story: Whether you’re building a website or losing weight, remember – momentum is a powerful thing.  Stick with it.

The Four Week Challenge

Four weeks from now, I’ll be back out on a cruise ship in the Caribbean. This time, however, it won’t be for work – I’ll be going on an actual vacation!

Because of this, I figured it would be a great opportunity to challenge myself to get in great shape over the next month.  If I’m going to be sitting on a ship deck or the beach in board shorts every day, might as well try to look damn good doing so.  I plan on taking some updated pictures and shooting a video or two for Nerd Fitness while traveling, which is all the motivation I need to stay on target.

Here are my goals for these upcoming 28 days:

Rather than fill up this blog with daily ups and down of my 28 day challenge, I’ll be posting my journal in the 28 Day Challenge on the Nerd Fitness message boards.  I’ll be posting my meals and complete workouts on there so you can follow exactly what I’m doing.  Yup, this is you getting early admission into the GREATEST MESSAGE BOARD EVER!!

Warning: the previous statement was a blatant lie.

Join Me.

Starting today, I want you to make a pledge to do two or three things that level up your life with 100% consistency over the next 28 days.

I’ll be taking a picture of myself and all of my measurements this morning (bicep, chest, legs, waist, and weight).  I encourage you to do the same – even if it’s just a picture and your weight.  – You don’t have to show anyone your pictures either – they’re more for you to see your results, but if you ARE okay with showing them that’s okay too.

Next, I want you to come up with a list of two or three obtainable goals or new habits you’d like to develop over the next month.  Preferably one diet related and one fitness related.  Don’t be too ambitious, but make sure your goals will be a challenge for you.

And then get it done, one day a time, for the next four weeks.

Why 28 days? Other than the fact that my vacation is four weeks from now…28 days is the perfect amount of time to see the start of great results (if you are completely devoted to the task at hand), and it’s also the perfect amount of time to develop a new habit according to Leo over at ZenHabits (one of my favorite sites).  Also, 28 days is enough time to build up some serious momentum going into April and May – which leaves plenty of time for you to get ready for the summer and swimsuit season.

Join the NF boards and start your own thread/diary on the 28-Day Challenge section along with me. Public accountability is incredible for keeping you going when you feel like giving up; plus, you’ll have a community of people to lean on when you’re not strong (cue “Lean on Me”).

Note: when you sign up for a new account, it should email you an activation link.  If it doesn’t email you anything after an hour or two (and it’s not in your spam), please email me at steve@nerdfitness.com and I’ll make your account active.  Still trying to work out the kinks.

Win a Prize – OMG!

To make things interesting – I’m going to award a prize to the person who is the most consistent and a prize to the person who has the best results (biggest transformation – either weight loss or muscle gain…this is where pictures really help).

Please note: I’ll be picking my winners from people that post their goals and results on the NF message boards and people who announce their acceptance of the challenge on their own website and track progress there.  If you’re in, let me know a.s.a.p!

Now, because this is all on the honor system, and because I’m broke as hell – the prize isn’t going to be “1000 dollars cash!” or anything like that…OR IS IT!?!?!

(no, it’s not.)

I was thinking more along the lines of a Nerd Fitness t-shirt (not even available yet!) and an iTunes gift card. Maybe I’ll even pick you up a souvenir down in Mexico when we stop in Cozumel…I hope you like comically oversized sombreros!

To preempt your questions or concerns that this 28-day challenge isn’t very well organized or thought-out, that’s because it ISN’T very well organized or thought-out.  I came up with this idea at 11:15PM last night when I should have been going to bed, so cut me some slack :)

Alright, let’s do this:

Don’t forget to take a picture of yourself today, and another picture of yourself at the end.  I encourage you to write down as much as possible, every single day – it will help you stay on track – and it will make it easier for me to pick you as a winner!

Let’s see what we can get done in 28 days as a fellowship.  I don’t care if I’m the only one doing it or if all one-thousand of us are leveling up during the month of March…either way I plan on kicking ass and getting stronger and healthier.

How bout you?

-Steve

Great challange Steve-I'm in although I may not be taking any photos :-). Small children might read this site!
I love when the first of the month is on a Monday-no excuses to wait another day or week.
    Good luck everyone!
  • I'm in. This sounds awesome. I'm going to take tonight to think of my key goals for the next 28 days. I already have some for the next 75 days (until my wedding day), so I'll just make some shorter, more specific ones. Great idea
  • NerdFitness
Congrats on the wedding Hugh (I think I told you that in an email) - it's a good first third of your 75 days and will build some solid momentum!

    Steve-
Have been reading through your site for the past week or so. Liking it so far, though I'm not sure how I feel about someone who needs to GAIN wait.
I'm hoping to lose about 5 pounds before a trip to Belize in 2 weeks, then by 6 weeks my goal is to be down to 155 (from 165 now) and run my half marathon at a 6:30 min/mile pace.
Good luck w/ your weight gain.
  • NerdFitness
    Hey Jeff!

    Thanks for reading man.

Yeah, I realize I'm in the minority when it comes to wanting to gain weight...but hopefully you'll see I want to build muscle...which is incredibly difficult for me...which means I need to eat well and exercise with intensity (just like people who need to lose weight). Although I'm coming at it from the other end of the spectrum, my goals are the same: to look and feel better!

    -Steve
  • Matt
Goals for the next 4 weeks:

    1- Join the NF forums!
2- 100 Pushups weekly plan, just took the initial "test" on Saturday, and will start week 1 today, so that's good timing
  • NerdFitness
There ya go Matt! Let me know how the 100 pushup challenge goes...that'll cook your muscles big time.

Look into the 200 squats challenge too if you want a lower body workout.

This was the exact motivation I needed. I know a lot of people are doing three things, but I'm going to only do two, and I'm going to make them manageable.

    1. Log my eating on The Daily Plate every day.
    2. Get AT LEAST 7 hours of sleep a night. If I don't make 7 hours, I'll have to make it up in a nap the next day. I do so much better when I'm well-rested.

I'll elaborate on both of these points tonight on my blog. http://waterballoonist.blogspot.com

I have a weigh-in so it will be perfect. I'll also take a picture of myself and post that on my blog so that all may bask in my bare-chested glory (I'm a man so don't get your hopes up unless you're into topless fat guys. I'm going to shut up now)!

If I win, I want the sweetest luchadore mask you can find. I have aspirations of becoming a Mexican wrestling celebrity.

    Andrew
  • NerdFitness
    Love it Andrew!

Best of luck on your effort - I'll be following along. Also, your topless fat guy comment just made me spit out my coffee...and i wasn't even drinking any. hahahahaha

Luchadore mask...i'll see what I can find.

Topless fat guy pics are up. Take a gander. http://bit.ly/cn609n

I'm totally up for the challenge! Like yourself, I have a 7 day trip to Cozumel leaving April 29th, so I have a little less than 2 months left to get in the shape I want to be in for this trip. 7 days in bikini, plus all inclusive food and drink, leaves little room for failure until then. My goals are:

    1. Get up early to workout 6 days a week- whether it be 3 mile run with the dog, spin class, weight class, Zumba, or my own gym routine

    2. No take-out or restaurant food. If I have to eat at a restaurant- no bread or fatty meals- stick to lean meats and veggies- no pasta either... I'm hungry already!

    3. Evening walks with the dog after dinner
  • NerdFitness
    Glad to have ya Shannon!

Cozumel is a great time, I'll be stopping there along with Grandy Cayman while on the cruise. Sounds like you got your work cut out for ya, but I love the ambition...now stick with it!

    -Steve
  • I love this! I recently launched a group here in Phoenix to help people reach their goals.... way to implement a fellowship. I will definitely participate; I was just sitting here thinking 'what can I blog about?' My goals will be posted on amateurnetworker.com. See you on the flip-side.
  • NerdFitness
Love it Shauna! I'll be following :)

    -Steve
  • I'm in! Let's see how this goes...

    1. Finally get into the habit of counting calories.
    2. Workout in the gym at least three times a week.
    3. Stop snacking on junk at work.

    I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
  • I'll probably be tracking my progress on my blog (and hopefully on the NF MB, too!): http://kristenality.wordpress.com/2010/03/01/yo...
  • NerdFitness
Hey Kristen, I think even just a week of keeping track of what you eat will really open your eyes.

Junk food at work is really tough to get away from at work...stay strong!

    -Steve
  • You actually hit this on the right day. My training partner, Daphne, and I are doing a 30 Day Paleo Challenge starting today. I might have to take you up on it.

    1) Paleo diet, paleo diet, paleo diet...
    2) Core and Ab workouts 3x a week.
    3) Get familiar with my beginning forms in Tai Chi Chuan.
    4) Drink only water, ergo give up coffee for the hell of it.
  • NerdFitness
m00se, that's how good I am. I can read minds.

    Tai Chi...sounds awesome.

Let me know if you're going through bad caffeine withdrawals too.

    -Steve
  • Great stuff Steve. I've set forth a similar challenge for myself and have started taking photos to track progress. Some of my goals:

    1) Get better sleep.
    2) Cut out alcohol and replace those calories with delicious protein.
    3) Keep climbing 2-3 times a week and run 3 miles a week.
  • NerdFitness
Cutting out alcohol is probably the best way to drop weight if you're a consistent drinker...that and soda.

    -S
  • Don
    Dude,
I am so in on this. Great idea.
  • NerdFitness
    Hey Don!

Love it. Can't wait to have you on the boards. I activated your account, let me know if it's still not working :)

    -Steve
  • I will do this! Not sure about the pictures though. I might have to talk myself into that one. Let me think and I'll be back with mine!
  • NerdFitness
Hahaha, even if you take the pics just for yourself...it's often tough to see changes with yourself daily because you see yourself every day. sometimes it takes a before/after pic to see the changes.

    -Steve
  • Jordan
Who doesn't like comically oversized sombreros??
  • NerdFitness
    I know. duh.

    -Steve
  • Ryan
Agree with Leo, too, on the 28 days. Enough time to get any adjustment nailed down or tossed. I might take you up on the challenge since a) I've never done one before and b) I'm motivated. I actually started IF last Tuesday after reading your article. After reading about for the last year I wasn't entirely bought on the idea. Well, I can say that within a week I've noticed a few benefits:

    1. Better sleep
    2. Consistent and slow drop in weight (I wanted to make sure my diet was in place before a complete dedication to exercise besides my morning maintenance, so 4 lbs. in a week isn't shabby)
    3. Control portions a lot better which is strange and cool (you'd think after fasting you'd be starving)

So, all in all, in place to start the challenge. Thanks for sharing Steve. (By the way, activate my NF account!)
  • NerdFitness
Sleep is so crucial...which sucks because we never get enough of it.

Your account should be activated, and you should get an email that says it's active, let me know!
