My New Life as a Homeless Man

Welp, I’m officially homeless!

By the time you read this, I’ll be driving up I-85, somewhere between Atlanta and Richmond, VA.  My entire life is currently packed into the pack of my Jeep: golf clubs, a guitar, a few boxes of DVDs and books that I need to sell, two bags of clothes, and a laptop bag.  Now, normally this drive would be a lot of fun for me – I love long solo road trips.

However, Atlanta and the surrounding area is setting record lows for temperatures today (it’s freaking snowing)…and the heat in my car is BROKEN.

Fortunately, I found THESE beauties buried in my closet, and I definitely will be wearing them while driving.  Hopefully with two pairs of socks, slippers, Under Armour, two sweatshirts, two pairs of pants, a hat, and gloves, I should be able to make it safely without freezing my butt off.  I do have a Plan B should it be necessary: setting fire to various things in my car for warmth.

To make my drive even more interesting: I was contacted last week by KSL in Utah to talk about Nerd Fitness and my upcoming trip today!

If you’re interested in hearing my teeth chatter while hopefully not stumbling through my very first ever radio interview, tune in today at 3:30pm EST!  This still might change, so keep an eye on my twitter page for updates from the road (unless my fingers fall off…which is a distinct possibility).

Welcome new readers!

Last week, my article on Traveling Around the World for $418 kinda blew up. Since getting syndicated on Gizmodo on Thursday, it has been viewed over 236,000 times, liked on Facebook 8200 times, retweeted 900 times, and racked up 411 comments.  Nothing like this has EVER happened in the  two years I’ve been running Nerd Fitness – the last 72 hours have easily been the coolest, craziest three-day span in the history of the site.  The whole experience still feels very surreal to me – my jaw remains on the floor.

To whoever sent the article to Gizmodo – thank you!  I am forever in your debt.

If you are new to the site, welcome to Nerd Fitness! Hopefully you’ll stick around.  Although I certainly plan on writing about my adventures around the world, I’ll continue cranking out articles on how to level up your life as well.  Make sure you check out the Nerd Fitness message boards, home to over 500 rebels who are helping each other stay accountable, answer questions, and offer support.  It’s a pretty kick-ass community, and I’m so proud to be a part of it.

Now, if you’re a veteran and have been here for a while, say hi to the newbies poking around, and don’t pick on them too badly 😀

I’ve been without Internet since Friday, and spent most of my weekend helping my other two roommates move out, so I am WAY behind on my email replies…which is not good when you get 400+ more emails than normal! If you’ve emailed me in the past week (especially since “Gizmodo Day” as it is now called), thanks for your patience and I’ll get back to you as soon as humanly possible!

The best part about all of this: I now have multiple contacts in every city I plan on stopping, which wasn’t true four days ago – again I am in awe of the power of the Internet and social media.  I”ll be reaching out to some folks in each spot to try and help with putting together some fun meet-ups – either at local bars, parks, beaches, and so on.  If you happen to live in one of the cities I’ll be visiting, keep an eye on the site for meet-up info!

Free DailyBurn Pro trial memberships

Tis the season for giving, whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Quanza, or Festivus. I was recently contacted by the fine folks over at DailyBurn who asked if I wanted to help them give away free 3-month trial Pro-Memberships throughout the month of December.  I’ve been using DailyBurn for probably two years, dating way back to when it used to be called “Gyminee,” so I had no problem saying yes.

If you want to give their pro-membership a free 3-month trial, head on over to this link. Yeah, you do have to put your credit card in and cancel it before the three months if you don’t want to get charged, but I know it’s a quality service and I trust these guys.  If you don’t want to give them your CC info, try out their free site – it’s fantastic for tracking calories and keeping track of your workouts.

I don’t make a single penny or get any compensation for posting this/getting people to sign up – I just love the site and want to spread the good word.

No D.C. meet-up, but YES to NYC party

Due to a few unexpected events, I won’t be able to do an NF meet-up in Washington, D.C. like I had hoped 🙁 I had to wait for the cleaning crew to take care of our apartment this morning, which means I had a really late departure time.  When I factor in stops for gas, food, the occasional defrosting of my extremities, and the KSL interview, it means I’ll be stopping two hours earlier than expected, staying in Richmond instead of DC.  Then tomorrow morning, I need to haul ass to New York City.

I’m sorry that there’s no meet-up this time in D.C., but I promise we’ll do something awesome the next time I come back through there.

The big reason I need to get up to New York so quickly is because I’m headed to Tim Ferriss’s Four-Hour Body launch party! Tim Ferriss and the Four-Hour Workweek inspired me to buy the domain NerdFitness.com over three years ago, and he’s the inspiration for my upcoming crazy trip around the globe.  When I heard about this party, which just happened to be in a city I would be driving through on that day, it just seemed like destiny.  Factor in the tiny entrance fee and open bar, and I’m ALL over it.  If you happen to be going, shoot me an email!

Even if you’re not going to the party, let me know if you’re in NYC as I’ll probably be sticking around until probably Friday. Friday afternoon, I’ll be driving through Connecticut (with a poker-detour at Foxwoods Casino) and continuing on my way to Boston to hang with some friends.  On Sunday, I’ll finally head to Cape Cod to spend a few weeks with my family.

So what’s my plan at home?

Once I get to Cape Cod, I’ll be in full work/plan mode for my trip – cranking out articles, researching cities and countries, connecting with readers in each location, and preparing myself for my first six months on the road.  I lost a bunch of weight while traveling in Peru last month (not a good thing), so I’m going to try and pack on some extra weight in these next few weeks by lifting heavy and eating lots of high quality calories.

As far as trip planning goes, I’ve spent the past few days reading everything my friend Karol over at Ridiculously Extraordinary has written about light packing for long-term travel – that dude knows his stuff.  I’m also going to take a page out of the ManVsDebt playbook and sell the rest of this crap – DVDs and books that I won’t be needing anymore.  The next few weeks are going to be pretty hectic, but it’s nothing compared to what’s in store come January 14th.

Wish me luck on the rest of my drive, I’ll check back in Thursday from NYC!

-Steve
