Is It Really Worth It?

It will require commitment and dedication.

It will require you to say “no” sometimes.

It will require sacrifice.

It won’t be quick.

It won’t be easy.

It won’t be fun all of the time

Your friends will laugh at you for doing things differently.

Your coworkers will gawk and poke fun at your new eating habits.

Your loved ones will call you crazy and ask you to “be normal.”

You will have to change some habits.

You will want to give up.

You will want to go back to bed.

You will want to say “eh, good enough.”

And you will ask yourself: “is it really worth it?”

You’re damn right is is.

You will feel great when you set a new record for push ups.

You will let out a rebel yell when doing your first pull up.

You will feel awesome running faster this week than last week.

You will be amazed at how far you’ve come when looking at old pictures.

You will feel good when people ask “have you been working out?”

You will smile when your kids say “I want to be strong like you!”

You will be surprised when people come to you for fitness advice.

You will feel pride when you look at yourself in the mirror.

You will go to sleep knowing that you’re a better person today than you were yesterday.

It is worth it.

PS – This goosebump-inducing video perfectly sums up why us members of the Nerd Fitness Rebellion do the things we do.  If you’re a fan of Friday Night Lights, the style and music of this video will be immediately familiar.

You might not be trying to get into the NFL, but it doesn’t mean there’s you can’t learn from this.  Work hard.  Push harder.  Be better today than you were yesterday. Level up.

How Bad Do You Want It Video

PPS – I decided to radically alter my travel plans last minute, so I’m currently in Madrid, having arrived last night at 2AM.  On Friday I fly to Paris, next week I’m off to Monaco and Nice before continuing on to Barcelona, Ibiza, and Valencia.

I should be able to cross at least six things off my Epic Quest of Awesome.  Not sure where “sleep,” “work,” “hygiene,” or “personal well-being” will fit, but I’ll find a way to make it happen.

PPPS – I want to give a special shout out to Nia, a long time Rebel who’s ready to get back at it after six months of chemotherapy.  Kick some ass Nia, you have the full support of the Rebellion – we are puling for you 🙂

  1. The song is Your Hand In Mine by Explosions in the Sky. And you are right about being close to Friday Night Lights since this is the same band that did the sound track for the movie and a lot of the TV series. They rock.

  2. “Sleep is for those people who are broke.” I take that saying as meaning not just broke financially, but broke spiritually, broke physically. There is EPIC truth in that! Coming from a guy that made about $400 million with Vitamin Water, I’d say it’s worth listening to 50.

“Use what talent you possess; the woods would be very
silent if no birds sang except those that sang best.”

    ~ Henry Van Dyke

    Best wishes to Nia!

  3. hmmm… this post, combined with the video may, or may not have just made me cry. So much truth in every word. I am printing this out and posting it by my bed to read every single morning when I wake up. Then posting another one in the bathroom and on my desk so that on those days when I want to ignore it, I can’t.

    Thank you very much.
All my love to Nia! Cancer is strong, but you are obviously stronger and more amazing, and I’m so happy that you’re back on the horse! *applause* 😀

  4. i’ve most definitely been using that video to help push me the last few days.

i’ve even been running.  which, if you’re a part of the message boards, you realize what a big deal that is 🙂 🙂 🙂

  5. I was gonna say: I don’t know Friday Night Lights, but I know Explosions in the Sky any time. I made a pretty cool music video for that song once, at a friend’s request. composed of NASA/JPL videos.

  6. I love this video.
Seriously, though, get some sleep.  i’m in favor of having priorities and it’s great to want to succeed, but crashing and burning your body is not probably the best way to do it.

  7. “You will want have to change your habits.”

You WILL want to erase the want in this sentence ;-))))

  8. “You will want have to change your habits.”

  9. And think, today I thought about skipping the workout because it’s hot and there are other things I could do…. This was a beautiful video and a great post.

And to Nia, keep fighting, girl, you can do it!

  10. especially, when you are eating at a restaurant and you are trying to eat paleo friendly foods sometimes you friends give you a hard time. but it doesn’t matter cuz you are on a mission. awesome post.

  11. Great post Stephen-
Nia, I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.  So proud for you and your fight.  Be strong and know that many people are sending good vibes your way 🙂

  12. Thanks steve. This brought a tear to my eye. You’re right, it’s TOTALLY worth it. I’m sure everyone has been in the “ugh. is this really worth it?” mood once or twice. and if they prevail, they feel even stronger for it (mentally and physically). Thanks for putting it in such simplistic terms.

  13. I totally needed that today. Workmates giving me a hard time about paleo and just low inspiration even after great morning workout. The video and post lit the fire again. Thanks

  14. Thanks Steve and everyone. 6 months of treatment over. Now to get stronger than I was before I got ill :).

  15. Heavy rain.. Rainbow..
As my mobile app states, yesterday I “ran 16.0 km in 1 hour 33 mins 45 secs and burned 1378 calories” after seeing that particular video. I’m preparing for Half-marathon distance on Vilniaus Maratonas 2011 running event on September 11.. Thanks Steve for great post and great inspiration as usual!!

  16. I’m asking myself if it’s worth is a lot these days. I’ve achieved my fitness goals. Am I supposed to just keep setting new ones forever and never be content with what I’ve done? And I’m trying to figure out if I want to keep killing myself as much as I did to get here. And I’m realizing that everything in my life didn’t fall into place just because I can do backflips and snatch my bodyweight. Maybe I had the wrong reasons, but it cost me so much to make it happen, and it didn’t make me happy. It just made me strong and fast, unafraid, and able to push myself as far as I need to. I don’t want to be a killjoy, but there’s a point where fitness goes beyond being healthy, and then you have to wonder why you do it. I’m not a professional athlete. I’m not a soldier or a firefighter or a policeman. How far do you go before you stop needing to be better?

  17. Great inspirational post, Steve!  I’ve re-posted this to my blog at, with full credit to you!  I hope you don’t mind!

  18. Bruce Lee to the rescue to answer my own misgivings: Seriously, if you always put limits on what you can do, physical or
anything else, it’ll spread over into the rest of your life. It’ll
spread into your work, into your morality, into your entire being. There
are no limits. There are plateaus, but you must not stay there, you
must go beyond them. If it kills you, it kills you. A man must
    constantly exceed his level.”

I guess the reason to keep training and trying to get better is simply because I can. Whether you’re beginning or have already reached many of your goals, the point is in the growth, not the achievements themselves.

Full story behind the Bruce Lee quotation here:

  19. wow, I really like the statement you made, “You will go to sleep knowing that you are a better person today than you were yesterday.” Really powerful motivation, imagine if you were to live your life to the fullest and keep working towards your dreams, and knowing that even if you fail, you fail forward, you learn from your mistakes, you can only keep getting better if you were to put in the effort.

I believe this motivation works with everything else in life as with getting a better body too, to get into top shape aka ‘Hollywood Celebrity Shape’ :
